how to welcome 2006

Most of what is put into our mailbox every day by the mail lady, who roars up the sidewalk on her yellow motorcycle, is junk, but as Evan points out, even a store flyer is educational for us. We read what is on sale at the malls and “poligons” (industrial parks) to which we never actually go. We tried one Sunday but later found out that the malls are only open on the first Sunday of the month. According to an expat website I read, large stores are allowed to open up to 12 Sundays per year, so many of them stockpile them for December. This year they will be doing business today, the 11th, and the 18th.

This week we got an interesting flyer…for fireworks by mail, phone, and web sales. Some are restricted to those over 14 and some to those over 18 but really how will they know on the Internet? And why are they having specials on fireworks in December and January? Is it traditional to blow off a few Roman candles on New Year’s Eve? The only custom I’ve been told about for Nochevieja (literally, old night) is to eat 12 grapes at midnight, one on each stroke of the clock. This, for the unfortunate few who have large grapes and fast-chiming clocks, can result in choking. I would rather fire up a few sparklers myself.
